Wow.
I just made the realization that my last post was April 25th!!
So much has been happening around ‘the nest’, by the time the day is done, I have been way too tired to do any posting.
I do have a ton of new posts planned for the upcoming weeks ~ lots of paint, deck, organization and planting.
So please forgive me.
I promise I will put my blog writing higher up on the priority list and bang out some great new stuff.

If you remember last week, our nephew Xavier turned one.
Since we like to keep things equal between our nieces and nephews, we followed suit on this one.
Back before my blogging days, our nephew Nicholas turned one.
For his birthday, he had requested a rocking horse.
So we did the same for Xavier.
We started off with a pine rocking horse that we got from the Mennonite Furniture Factory Outlet in Cambridge.

We started off with some stain that we found that we had thought we had used for Nicholas’ horse.
The “hair” is all attached to the horse with screws, so before we started to stain the horse, we had to remove them.

We started off with some stain that we found that we had thought we had used for Nicholas’ horse.

As soon as I started to stain the rocking horse, I noticed that it appeared to be black.
So I looked at the can again.
Yep.
Black.
Ebony to be exact.
But I continued on and stained the whole horse, hoping that maybe it would somehow turn into a rich chocolately brown.
It did not.
DD sanded the horse down for me {although I am perfectly capable of doing this, sometimes I don’t think he trusts me…}
It actually looked really cool with black stain and sanded down.
It had a vintage look to it.
However, since the hair was brown it clashed horribly.
So off I went to Home Depot to buy a small can of high gloss wood paint.
In BROWN.
I painted the horse up with about three solid coats, allowing them to dry in between.
DD re-attached the hair and voila.

A perfect little gift for anyone on their first birthday.

As promised yesterday, here is another post with what we have been up to in this crazy house of ours.
If you remember a few weeks ago, I shared our deck plans.
On Easter weekend, we were informed that DD’s dad had sketched together our full ready-for-approval deck plans.
So what did we do?
Naturally, we carted back a truckload of gravel ready to mix the concrete for our footings.
It was tough work hauling gravel.
I do not envy DD’s profession.
It gave me a whole new appreciation for the labourious every day tasks that he and others like him do every day.
No wonder he stays fit without visiting a gym!
Later that week, DD brought in some string and markers for the support beams.
Our backyard looked booby-trapped.

This past Friday, our plans were approved by the City {woo hoo!}
Which meant it was time to get down and dirty.
DD and his dad worked super hard all weekend long, drilling holes into the ground for our deck posts.

This picture reminds me of the Robert Munsch book Murmel, Murmel, Murmel.
Does anyone else remember that?
Every time I looked out the back windows, I half expected DD to come out of the hole holding up a murmelling baby.
Wouldn’t it be nice if that was how babies really joined families?
I think a lot of women out there would agree that sounds a lot better than 9 months of pregnancy and then hours of labour.
Not that I would know.
But from what I have heard, anyways.
Fun factoid, Robert Munsch is actually from the city I was born in and now reside in.
Wanna know an even more fun factoid?
He lived on my street!
Well, technically not ON my street, but on the cul-de-sac off the street I grew up playing man-hunt in.
Cool, huh?
Even cooler – the book Show and Tell was about my childhood playmate and good friend {to this day} Sharon.
And I digress….
Back to the deck.
So now that the holes are all drilled and cleaned out, we have to wait until the city inspector comes to inspect our holes and make sure they are to code.
I think they come out a total of three times throughout the process.
DD was on the ball though.
He called the city and booked an appointment on Friday.
They should be here by today.
What does that mean?
Next step: cutting SoniTubes and pouring concrete footings.
Can’t wait to share the process with you!
